Get on the road and head to the mystic mountain of Montserrat.
This natural park, with its very peculiar peaks, protects the spiritual essence of Catalonia. For almost 1,000 years, a Benedictine community has lived in these mountains located 60 km away from Barcelona. On the way, listen to some interesting stories about Catalonia and its bounding to the holy mountain, scene of pilgrims since ancient times and part of the route to Santiago de Compostela. Your guide will share important information to understand the heritage you will discover during the tour.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Montana de Montserrat, 08199 Montserrat Spain
The Rocky Massif of Montserrat has been declared as Natural Park in 1987, and characterised by the rounded shape of its peaks. This incredible 4000-foot wonder is easily recognizable by its ''serrated'' top from which it got his name.
Once you reach the monastery, you have plenty of options and your guide will always adjust to your interests. We invite you to take an easy walk of around 30 min to enjoy one of the most astonishing views of the natural park, but if you wish you can also decide to enjoy other activities that the mountain offers.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Abadia de Montserrat, Carretera BP-1121 S/N, 08199 Montserrat Spain
Visit the Basilica of Montserrat, house of the serene image of the Virgin of Montserrat, the patron saint of Catalonia, a poly chrome Romanesque carving dating from the 12th century.
The legend says that in the year 880 some shepherd boys found a statue of the black madonna, the "Moreneta", in a grotto. A chapel was built on this site that soon became a place of pilgrimage.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Funicular de Sant Joan, Pl. Espanya station lobby Operates in the area around Mare de Déu de Montserrat abbey. From the abbey esplanade, the Sant Joan railway connects with the highest part of the mountain, 08691 Montserrat Spain
Decide with your small group of 8 pax if you want to enjoy a ride in the rack railway that will bring you at the top of the holy mountain. Enjoy astonishing views along the way.
Duration: 15 minutes
Stop At: Sant Jeroni, Montserrat Spain
Reach the peak of the holy mountain to enjoy a bird's eye view of the entire Montserrat Monastery and of the natural park. On clear days, you will enjoy uninterrupted views of the whole of Catalunya.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Aeri de Montserrat, Ctra C-55, 08199 Montserrat Spain
If you skipped the funicular, you can enjoy the cable car, a breathtaking journey over the Llobregat River and Valley, up the mountain and right up to Montserrat Monastery.
The cable car first started running in 1930. It travels at a speed of 5 metres per second and at a gradient of up to 45%.
This is a trip that is not for the faint heart - you will be travelling 1350 metres up the mountain in a small hanging car! However, if you are not afraid of heights, you will be in for a really memorable and rewarding experience.
Duration: 15 minutes
Stop At: Montserrat Museum, Montserrat Spain
If you wish, you can also decide to visit the Montserrat museum. It has an important section of early paintings, spanning the 13th to the 18th centuries, with works by El Greco, Caravaggio as well as a large collection of Catalan paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries that includes major names such as Fortuny, Rusiñol, Casas, Picasso and Dalí but also of French impressionism such as Chagall, Braque, Le Corbusier, Miró, Dalí and Picasso.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Santa Cueva de Montserrat, Montserrat Spain
Since the funicular that brings you to this holy place is under revision, we leave the option to you. If you feel like walking for around 30 min, you can have access to the Holy Cave, where, standing to the legend, the virgin is said to have appeared. The site has, since then, become an authentic center for pilgrimage and prayer.
From there, you will also be able to see the Cross of San Miguel and the wonderful views from this side of the mountain.
End your tour listening to the angelic voices of La Escolania de Montserrat, one of the oldest boys' choirs in Europe (subject to seasonal availability). This musical treat will conclude your mystical Montserrat visit.

Very steep trip up - husband went on cable car - was amazing - I stayed in bus - still enjoyed trip up. Step walk to look out but worth it. Needed a bit more time to do own thing - bit rushed - a bit of a wait for Choir to sing.
Loved Montserrat, but tour guide didn't really tell us much information. On the drive, he did tell us a bit of history, but when we got there, he walked us up to the Basilica and let us tour on our own. Previous tours, have been much more detailed. Basically, he just felt like a driver.
We had an amazing time starting with picking us up at our hotel on time by our tour guide Joan. He was very polite, intelligent and professional. Thanks to him, every minute of the trip was spent with pleasure and usefully. We had an amazing time and would definitely recommend to all visitors of Barcelona.
Guide murtza was extremely good and knowledgeable, there were 4 couples and he went at our pace. He also paid for the cable car ride to Montserrat which was not included but he said that it would be quicker and more convenient for us. He was right and the trip was excellent.
Despite the fact that we got a late start on account of our original guide being sick, our new guide, Nuria, did an excellent job getting us back on track. The ride up and down the cable car was great. The views from Montserrat are spectacular. We missed the choir singing on account of the crowds, but enjoyed walking around the area.
Montserrat is amazing. I feel as though I am in Shangri-la. Quite an extraordinary experience. I just wish we heard the famous Choral group of Montserrat. Our tour guide Mateo says they perform everyday except on Saturdays.
The tour with Joan was awesome. Highly knowledgeable about Barcelona and Montserrat. It was a pleasure all the way to the mountain and back. We got lots of information, great pictures and it was a very comfortable ride. We got to see the choir sing and had plenty of time to explore.
Our tour guide, Karles was excellent. He was engaging, funny and also gave a lot of good information about Montserrat. We were picked up before 9am so we arrived there early enough to get a good parking spot (less walking towards the entrance). Believe me, that matters. Montserrat is beautiful and this is a must see. I'm not Catholic but I still appreciate the history and the beauty of the place. We were a small group which was great. There was quite a bit of walking/hiking around there so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. We were so lucky to visit on such a gorgeous morning with not a cloud in the sky. My pictures came out so beautiful and bright. After the tour, as we were heading back, he also recommended a great place, El Nacional, for us to have lunch after the tour and even graciously dropped us off. Thank you very much, we had a great time!
The tour was amazing, the tour lady was great, on time, very informative and explained the entire tour through out the entire day.
Driver was fine. He explained every thing about the places and the attractions. He was joyful and driving carefully. He hotel pick up was good. our hotel was away from the main road but he he came walking to the hotel and Picked us.
If I could give 6 stars for this tour I would. Arnau was very welcoming and made it a first class experience. He did a fantastic job with the walking tour providing history and entertaining stories. Took the tram to San Joan and found the views to be spectacular. At the end, we also liked the fact that we were picked up at our hotel and were given the option to be dropped off at the city center. Thank you Arnau!
Aurno made our trip enjoyable and informative. It was so convenient to be picked up at our hotel. It was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it.
Pick up at our hotel was done in a timely fashion and our "small group" consisted of seven people which was a bonus. Tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable and made the ride out to Montserrat very pleasant. Montserrat itself is a site to behold. From the cable car ride to top to the grounds - pictures or videos don't do it justice. And you don't need to be religious to appreciate what it's all about. We had more than enough time to explore on our own (my wife actually took the hike up to St. Mary's Cross!) and there is a cafeteria and a few gift shops to peruse as well. All in all time (and money) well spent.
Nuria did an excellent job showing us Montserrat. She was very thoughtful and attentive to our needs. I had a little trouble walking due to a recent injury and she was attuned to what I could and could not accomplish. My husband, who was not injured, did not feel shorted either. We had a great time. It was a wonderful start to our vacation.
Our guide Paul was very knowledgeable! Told us a lot about current and historical events. Was timely as well.
We had a wonderful experience on this tour. Our guide Arnau was right on time for our hotel pick-up (it was really handy to be picked up and not have to worry about getting somewhere else at a certain time), a good driver, and very knowledgeable about Montserrat. He kept us entertained from start to finish, and had lots of insider tips about making the most of our time at the monastery. We had just the right amount of time touring with Arnau as well as time on our own. Because of Arnau we were able to make the right "free time" choices so we could get seats to hear the boys' choir sing. This tour was a bit of a splurge for us, but it was the best tour on our 3 week vacation, so I feel it was well worth the price. Thank you Arnau!
Our guide, Gaspar, was fantastic! Highly recommend the small group tour. This was our very first experience with Viator, and we were really impressed. This was worth the price and more. Hotel pick-up was on time and so convenient. It ended up just us and one other couple. Gaspar is an excellent driver, we felt very safe with him driving while talking to us about Montserrat and the area. At one point a driver on the opposite side of the highway veered into our lane and it could've been a disastrous head-on collision, but Gaspar was paying attention and had excellent reflexes, calmly and quickly getting us out of harm's way. We learned a lot but it was like talking with a friend. Montserrat is lovely, however like most places worth visiting, it is crowded with tourists. It was great to be there with a guide who understood the lay of the land and navigate around the crowds. Gaspar wanted to make sure that all of us got what we hoped for from the visit, he was very aware of this as a spiritual place as well as a tourist attraction, and wanted to make sure that any spiritual experience was respected. With Gaspar's desire to make sure we all enjoyed this excursion and it being a small group, we were all able to weigh in on Gaspar's suggestions. Bad weather started to come in over the mountain while we were there, so rather than cutting our tour short, Gaspar made a suggestion of stopping by a local (not-touristy) seaside town on the way back to Barcelona. Our little group unanimously agreed to this and we had a very positive experience: we got to see Montserrat and then we got to experience a slice of local life. This tour was by far one of the highlights of our 3-week Mediterranean vacation. We had one other great tour with Viator in Barcelona, and we'll be using Viator and booking small group excursions with Viator again in the future. You will get so much more out of a small, personal tour than larger group tours.
Montserrat is an amazing place, the only regret we have is not going up the funicular earlier. Unfortunately our guide, Evelyn, did't advise to do that first and when we got up to the very top we had just 10 minutes to enjoy the amazing view before having to get back down. Evelyn seem very knowledgeable and was a nice tour.
This was an unusual tour high in the mountains outside the city. Our tour guide was very good. The monastery is impressive with a beautiful basilica. The cable car ride up the mountain was a plus. The scenery in and around the monastery is beautiful. I highly recommend this tour for adults. I think it might be challenging for families with young children due to the incline in Monserrat although there were quite a few children there.
Our tour guide Francesc was awesome, funny and speaks English very well. We were picked up first (promptly) and picked up a single traveler and another small group on the way. The pick up route was well planned and i never felt we went out of our way. On the trip up, Francesc shared good info and insight on the region. He adapted the tour well based on everyone's need - fortunately everyone in our group was up to the gondola ride to Montserrat. He gave us a good overview of Montserrat and suggestions of things we could do during our free time. Unfortunately, the boys choir was not performing the day we went, which was unforeseeable. We had a great half day and it was nice to see a little of the countryside outside of Barcelona.
Very good attention from the cuide Carles. Thank you very much,!! Everything on time. Guide information complete .
This half-day tour was well worth the money! Our guide Vincent was a wealth of knowledge about Monsterrat and the city of Barcelona. He was friendly, professional. He was easy to converse with as his English was excellent! He encouraged us to ask questions and stayed with us as we toured the site. He also gave our small group of just 6, insight and information about the people, places and key sights to see while in Barcelona. If you're looking for a good way to get outside of the city, this tour is a must. No hassling with catch a bus or train, you’ll receive door to door pickup and drop off. I’m so glad we decided to book this tour, thank you to Vincent and our driver Jauquin.
The entire experience was outstanding from the moment we met our driver on the Rambas street at 3:00pm (15:00). Our hotel pickup location close to the Rambas was not accessible. Karles did an outstanding job and I would recommend him. Tour date: Tuesday, April 2, 2019
Our guide - Moriutz - was terrific! He was prompt, kind, humorous, and a joy with our group. Perfect length for an excursion.
We had an early morning pick up at our hotel on Plaza Real. An excellent trip to Monserrant, and then cable car to the top. Enjoyed the excursion of the Basilica and hearing the boys choir. Our driver was informative,, left the group to discover the site, and informed us best time to enter the Basilica.
Our guide Miquel ckearly explained many items of interest on the hour long drive from Barcelona to Montserrat. When we arrived he explained the history of the monastery and the structure of the community of Benedictine monks. The walk to the cross was arduos, but Miquel modulated the pace so I didn’t pass out. The view when we arrived made the trek worthwhile. The highlight of the visit was the concert by the boys choir in the beautiful church. All in all, this was a great half day excursion. Btw, Miquel is a great driver!
It was great! Our tour guide Mariuz Lewy was very knowledgeable and fun and made sure we maximized the experience. We will definitely recommend this tour to all our friends...
Nuvia, the guide, loves to tell the history of Montserrat... its origin, purpose, destruction, recreation.. and continued place in the hearts of Catalonia. Thanks for coupling the people, passion, and place of Catalonia in our common human venture for peace, justice, compassion, serenity, and ultimate security in each other's care, competence, and commitment to living a life of community. J and R Naples Florida
Very knowledgeable guide and only 6 of us in the van. Definitely a step above the larger jam packed buses and the hotel pick up and drop off make it the best choice over all. We did this tour in mid December so really needed to bundle up. Montserrat is truly stunning and we were lucky enough to hear the Boys' Choir sing three songs while we were inside. wonderful!
Our guides arrived at our apartment at 8:30 AM for our tour of Montserrat 90 minutes from Barcelona. It was a rather cramped van ride, as other people joined our group of five and we all squeezed in with our driver and tour guide. Our guide was rather animated, which actually made the trip all that more interesting. Montserrat is home to a well-known boys choir, which we had hoped to hear but they were touring in the United States. That was a bit disappointing but not the fault of our guide or the tour...just timing. Our day at Monserrat began with a mile long walk to the Santa Cova Holy Grotto where La Moroneta Virgin Mary first appeared. The walk to the Santa Cova included statues and scenes representing 12 events in Christs life. These are called the 12 mysteries. After the walk to Santa Cova we went to the cathedral and the cloister. In front of the cloister are four trees: Palm, Cypress, Olive and Cedar of Lebanon representing eternal life, the spiritual, peace and strength respectively. I have to say that the English major in me was so drawn to the stories and symbolism of everything. Totally related to the tour.
