Day Trip to Szentendre from Budapest

Join a like-minded local and take the train from Budapest to the historic town of Szentendre, a peaceful spot on the banks of the Danube which is renowned for its artistic charm, and so is also known as the City of Artists and Painters. Once you arrive, you’ll start exploring from Fő Tér, the Main Square, which is the heart of this enchanting town. Although it was rebuilt in the 17th century, the town was established in Medieval times and in this historic part of town you can still see traditional buildings and paved streets. Explore the town and visit one or two of its nine churches, like the beautiful 18th century baroque-rococo Blagovestenska Church, found in the Greek Quarter of the town.

As well as its historical churches, the town is packed with unique galleries! Visit the Ur Eleonóra Batik Galeria where you can buy beautiful silk batik to take home with you, and the Szentendre Art Mill which exhibits a diverse range of works by local and international artists. As well as wonderfully unique and local studios and galleries, you’ll find an eclectic selection of museums too! Visit the Retro Design Museum which houses a collection of items from the 1970’s, the The Hungarian Open Air Museum where you can learn about Hungarian culture or the famous Szamos Marzipan Museum where you can of course buy some of these delicious sweet treats!

As well as indulging in some marzipan, stop to enjoy an authentic meal at a local restaurant, where you can taste traditional dishes like goulash or Serbian cuisine which the town is also known for. Before heading back to Budapest, you can’t miss climbing Church Hill, with its beautiful views over the river and the town square.
