Visit: Cappelle Medicee, Piazza di Madonna Degli Aldobrandini 6, 50123, Florence Italy
The Medici Chapels were built as the personal sepulcher of the Medici family in the Basilica of San Lorenzo, which was considered by the Medici as their private church.
In 1520, Cardinal Giulio de' Medici (who would become Pope Clemente VII) together with Pope Leo X commissioned Michelangelo Buonarroti with the building of the Sagrestia Nuova as the mausoleum for the Medici family. The chapel was to form a pendant to Filippo Brunelleschi's Sagrestia Vecchia. Construction began in March 1520 and was finally completed by Giorgio Vasari in 1546, after Michelangelo had left Florence for Rome in 1534.
The chapel was to hold the tombs of the two 'Magnifici' and the two 'Capitani' of the Medici: Lorenzo il Magnifico, his brother Giuliano de' Medici, Lorenzo Duke of Urbino, and Giuliano Duke of Nemours (the third son of the Magnifico).

At this time of year, you really didn't need the skip the line tickets. Still an interesting stop.
No line so felt a bit cheated
For people interested in the Medici and in Renaissance art and history, this is a not-to-be-missed venue, containing Michelangelo's carvings for all Medici tombs. What we purchased was not a guided tour, but simply an admission ticket. Still, for those who have been steeped in the Renaissance or even just WANT to be, it was a spectacular experience. I can't say enough good things about it.
It wasn't any line, and we were in full season (August 12th, at 11 a.m.) and if you buy the ticket at the entrace is only 8 euro each. We payed 18 euro/person and we hadn't have anything special than other visitors
Worth a trip. Best to read up on the Medici family and Florence's history before visiting. Or, take the Academia and Uffizzi tour first, as guides will explain the history of the Medici family.
