Jiufen is now a part of New Taipei city, and it was the largest gold mining town in Taiwan when Taiwan was under Japanese rules. It was quickly on the decline as its mine depleted, and much of its residents left the town. The community revitalized itself as the movie-a city of sadness gained popularity, Jiufen was transformed into a popular travel destination.

Laoho street was one of an entrepot alongside the Keelung river for Han Chinese to trade with aborigines and, as the river was choked by the slit of mud as well as the expansion of Bade Road; LaoHo street lost its importance. In 1987, led by the Taipei City government it was remodeled as one of the biggest night markets in the city.
